First Week in London
The first week of classes is now over. I think this semester will be a harder than I'd like it to be. I have to write a paper or two for each class, so that would be at least 8 papers this semester. They are all longer length papers too. Plus I have to write a paper on our entry tour that we did. Besides that, I've got a lot of reading to do. And I mean a lot. In my cinema class I've got to read a packet consisting of like 20 pages, which I have about half of it read, by Monday. For my London in Literature class that I have on Tuesdays, I have to read the first 21 chapters of Oliver Twist by Tuesday. In my 20th Century British Novel class I have to read the whole entire novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce by next week Wednesday. For my history class, I think there is a little bit of reading. I have more homework to do here than I did at home, which is absolutely bogus. No way in heck do I want to sit inside reading 2 novels a week while living in London where there is so much to do and see. I think it is so ridiculous that for my British Novel class that we literally read a new novel every single week. I am not able to read that fast and understand whats going on in the book, so I'll be clueless. I'm so bad at comprehending what I read and I'm worried about how I'll keep up in class.

Claire,
ReplyDeleteThat does seem like a ton of reading. But a part of what Universities do is challenge you. Challenge you to do more, to comprehend more in a shorter period of time. I know it seems daunting right now. I'm the same way when it comes to reading and comprehension. Many times I have to re-read passages to understand them. But you will find a way to make it happen. You just need time to adjust and find a pattern that works for you. It will not be easy but college isn't suppose to be easy. Take each day one at a time and don't forget to breathe...you will find time to get out and explore once in a while. You have to remember that you are still in school and not on vacation. (I know...not what you want to hear!)It's difficult to adjust and push yourself...but try to find what works best for you. It won't happen overnight, but you will start finding yourself completeing all that work on time. Just remember to take mini breaks. Don't force yourself to complete everything in one or two sittings! Take breaks to clear your mind. Walk around a little. But just stay focused on the task at hand. Stay focused on that education. And when you get so tired of reading...send us a another message so we can be your cheerleaders! So we can keep you motivated! Be your moral support. We will try to be your energy to help you push forward!
Remember...one day at a time. Give things a chance and give yourself some time to adapt.
We're headed to Wisconsin for 4 days. We should see your mom and dad one evening. My younger sister is visiting with her two daughters from Nevada. On Sunday most of the McMullen Clan will get together to catch up and of course...celebrate my Birthday!! Yippeee!
You can do this Claire...we know you can. You have to give it your best shot...that is all anyone can ask.
Now get crackin on those books! :)
