Week 3 in London

After another week of classes, I was glad to have a couple days off. Tuesday my London in Literature class went on a "Dickens Field Trip". My teacher walked us around part of London where Dickens had settings in his books, apparently. It was cold out and I wasn't in the mood to be outside walking around for 3 hours. We went to the Dickens Museum as well, which we basically toured his house. That was kind of neat, but besides that I thought the Dickens Field Trip wasn't anything special. On Thursday my history class went out walking around and my teacher for that class told us some history of the buildings we passed. Eventually we ended up at the Museum of London. We zipped through the museum, and so I'm not exactly sure why he took us there. After class, me and a couple friends went out and found Abbey Road. There were a lot of people there taking the classic Beatles photo walking across the street. I would hate to be a driver that has to go on that road often, because they constantly have to stop at that crosswalk for people to take their pictures. We tried doing the picture as well, too, and it didn't turn out. So we'll have to go back another time to try again. We saw Abbey Road Studios, and on the wall/gate thing in the front of it had a bunch of graffiti and things like "____ was here!" and stuff like that. Of course, we had to do that as well. We wrote "I get by with a little help from my friends" and underneath that we all signed our names: Claire, Jeni, Brittany, Anna, Lisa, Alyssa. That evening there was another welcome event for people staying at ISH in the lobby, so we all went to that. They had some games and they had wine, candy floss (cotton candy), mini burgers, mini hotdogs, and french fries. It was nice chatting with our group. I really like the group of people who got accepted for this trip. I always like catching up with them and hearing funny stories from their days. There was karaoke that night in the ISH bar as well. I was going to stay for that, which started at 10pm, but I got really tired, so Brittany and I walked back to our room and went to sleep around 10:45.  Friday I slept in and got lunch around 12:30 with Lisa and Anna. Alyssa met us there and after lunch we went shopping on Oxford St. I got a shirt from H&M which was on the sale rack for 3 pounds, and I didn't try it on, so I hope it fits. Then later on we made it to the store Primark. Primark is a really neat store with so much clothes and shoes and accessories and bags. It's also quite a cheap place to shop. I got a pair of black tights there that are like fleece lined. They are so warm and comfortable. Later that night basically our whole group made our way to the Victoria and Albert Museum because there was some event going on.  It was kind of boring, so we went back to the ISH bar. Me and a couple others went and ate at Pizza Express because we were starving. After eating, which was like 10:30pm Brittany and I just walked back to our room and went to bed shortly after. Saturday I slept in and Lisa, Alyssa, Cherith and I crossed the London Bridge and were trying to find some market, which we didn't end up finding. Once we got back we ate supper and around 10pm a lot of us met in the MTH (Mary Trevelyan Hall) basement for a "gathering".  While majority of the group drank and played beer pong, I drank my water and just enjoyed myself playing some card games and visiting with the people. It was really fun and I came back to my room around 12:45am. Today I wrote a paper and read some more of Oliver Twist.  Later tonight Lisa and I are going to Skype with our roomies back in Point so that should be fun.

  1. Hi Claire,

See...now I am jealous...you have walked across Abbey Road and I have not!! I'll be that was really something to be there. Did you take a picture of the message you gals wrote on that wall? What a memory that will be! When we were there, I had to go to Cobham-Surrey, to try and find Threshold / Deram record studios. That is where my favorite band recorded most of their music. The Moody Blues! It was great fun doing those kind of things though.
It sounds like little by little you are getting more comfortable with your surroundings. It's nice to hear that you are enjoying your time off.
In case you haven't heard...I got the job! We are moving to Appleton. We drive up on the 10th and 11th. I start on the 18th! I couldn't be happier moving home again!
